I got pulled over this weekend and harrassed by a state trooper this weekend, the only thing really wrong was that my license plate lights were out, but he told me that he could give me a ticket for my pipes as he referred to my exhaust. I have headers and 80 series Flowmasters on my '89 Iroc with 350 TPI and no cats. I know there a alot of vehicles louder than mine and I think my car sounds great, as a matter of a fact I was pulled over by another State trooper a couple of weeks ago because he like the sound of my car. Can you really get a ticket for noise if you're minding your own business and not revving up your motor just to rack the pipes and you actually have a muffler.

yep... if your breaking the legal noise decibal(sp?) level.. heres your ticket, thank you drive through...... i got one.
when i took it to court the judge said "I cant believe he gave you a ticket for this, you'd think he would have better things to do."

In Connecticut you can. The State has defined decibel limits in the statutes and we carry a decibel meter in our cruisers. I haven't had to use it on a car yet. Harley's are another story.

Each state is slightly different. But going around easy with flowmasters "should" not get you in trouble.

i think most aftermarket exhaust parts are designed to be "legal" but only if you use ALL the required pieces. in this case probably leaving the catalytic converts off raised the "noise" level....not to mention the EPA thing.

I was told here in Illinois any exhaust after factory is illegal. A friend of mine got pulled over for having a turbo muffler that wasn't even loud and now hes going to court. I don't know how true this is but I guess the cops are cracking down on it more.

From what I have read here in Oklahoma, by state statute & our local city ordinance, "any modification to muffler/exhaust which increases the noise level" is considered improper. I haven't seen any decibel amount mentioned, & I doubt our PD would buy any anyway.
What this comes down to is officer discretion & what he thinks is loud, just like some officer hate being blinded by bright lights, & others hate the foglights that everyone thinks they can run all the time.
So, what we have is that virtually any Flowmaster, turbo style or glass pack is improper the minute it hits the road. Note that I did not say it was improper to install it. You can put anything you want on your car, or pay a muffler shop to do it, & its not improper until you pull out onto the roadway. Gotcha!
I bought an 88 Bronco a few years ago & someone had put on a glasspack in place of the converter/muffler, & it had a cracked exhaust manifold. I replaced the manifold & had a shop cut off the glasspack & put a decent sized pickup muffler on it (same thing my 60 year old dad put on his pickup). I'll tell people what I did to my own vehicle, & add, that I don't know of a cop anywhere around here that cares whether the converter is on or not. We're not the federal govt or epa! !
I have got to mention those silly little 4 & 6 cylinder cars, usually Japanese types, that have weird little mufflers & they love to rev them up as they go past me, thinking it OK. Those things sounds worse than straight pipes on a 350, or maybe it is just me!

Iceman do you think anyone with nonstock exhaust deserves a ticket or are you just stating the way the law is written. My exhaust sounds awesome and if everyone with exhaust other than stock exhaust got pulled over, cops couldn't do anything else

I saw in Vancouver (watched a video on it) of police actually checking the decible reading of possible street racers exhaust noise and if it was to high they hooked it up to a tow truck and off it went. Crazy huh?

I was mainly just quoting the law from my old memory. I do write for mufflers, but probably not more than 2 or 3 a month. They are not real high on my list unless I have a call in complaint or the driver decides to try arguing with me. I may have to "discuss" things with my wife at times, but on the side of the road I don't, so I just let them try explaining it to the judge! LOL!
By the way, I try real hard not to let someone irritating me change my mind from what I would normally do anyway!

I was told when i was pulled over that any modification to stock other than OEM equipment was against the law.. then i went home and read the laws on it and it said that it was based on sound and anything over a certain decibal level would get you a fine.

The muffler or mufflers shall be maintained by the owner in good working order and shall be in use whenever the motor vehicle is operated. No person, including a motor vehicle dealer or repairer or a motorcycle dealer, shall install, and no person shall use, on a motor vehicle, a muffler or mufflers lacking interior baffle plates or other effective muffling devices, a gutted muffler, a muffler cutout or a straight exhaust except when the motor vehicle is operated in a race, contest or demonstration of speed or skill as a public exhibition pursuant to subsection (a) of section 14-164a, or any mechanical device which will amplify the noise emitted by the vehicle. No person, including a motor vehicle dealer or repairer or a motorcycle dealer, shall remove all or part of any muffler on a motor vehicle except to repair or replace the muffler or part for the more effective prevention of noise. No person shall use on the exhaust system or tail pipe of a motor vehicle any extension or device which will cause excessive or unusual noise.
(c) The engine of every motor vehicle shall be equipped and adjusted to prevent excessive fumes or exhaust smoke.
(d) All pipes carrying exhaust gases from the motor shall be constructed of, and maintained with, leak-proof metal. Exhaust pipes shall be directed from the muffler or mufflers toward the rear of the vehicle and shall be approximately parallel with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and approximately parallel to the surface of the roadway, or shall be directed from the muffler upward to a location above the cab or body of the vehicle so that fumes, gases and smoke are directed away from the occupants of the vehicle. Exhaust pipes on a passenger vehicle shall extend to the extreme rear end of the vehicle's body, not including the bumper and its attachments to the body, or shall be attached to the vehicle in such a way that the exhaust pipes direct the exhaust gases to either side of the vehicle ensuring that fresh ambient air is located under the vehicle at all times. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles may adopt regulations in accordance with the provisions of chapter 54 to establish safety standards for passenger vehicles equipped with exhaust pipes located in front of the rear axle.
(e) Every motor vehicle shall, when operated on a highway, be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than two hundred feet, but no horn or other warning device shall emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle.

Any authorized emergency vehicle may be equipped with a siren, whistle or bell, capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than five hundred feet and of a type approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Such signal shall not be used unless the vehicle is operated in response to an emergency call or in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law, in which event the driver of the vehicle shall sound the signal when reasonably necessary to warn pedestrians and other drivers of the approach of the vehicle.
(g) Any person who violates any provision of this section shall be deemed to have committed an infraction for each offense

This is the garbage that we (car enthusiasts) need to fight...what the hell is happening to this country and legal system...Majority of the cops in this town (clarksville,TN) have nothing better to do but worry about someones exhaust being to loud or using the wrong color f*cking antifreeze....you need a honda echo or some jap green machine just to drive in this country ..what the hell happened to loud gas guzzling muscle cars built by fathers and grandfathers ...they should worry more about drug dealers and all these damn wanna be thugs running around ..and then after they cite you 20 tickets a year for stupid shit they have the nerve to call your house and ask for a 20 dollar donation to upgrade law enforcement equipment ... :finger: you and your equipment ..i think they should try firing about 2000 officers that arent doing jack and the 50 sherrifs they hired as "Litter Enforcement Officers" and buy their damn afgahni made equipment ..thanks for listening to my gripes
