But i love it when they end...
Ask any officer on this board what happens when a car takes off after being stopped. This is what happend to me the other night...
I see a Saturn driving on a sidewalk on to a main road. OK, suspicious enough, lemme run the plate. I switch over to the PDINFO1 channel to run it. Great, there are 3 guys in front of me and my MDT isnt working. So i follow this guy about 4 blocks when its finally my turn. I run the plate, the PLATE comes back stolen from a Buick. OK, before i light em up, lemme check my hot sheet to see if theres a stolen green Saturn. Yup, there it is...Stolen 3 days ago. Lights, sirens...shit, hes taking off. My foot is floored, shaking like crazy, my fingers are on a death grip on the steering wheel, the radio turned up, the sirens blaring, traffic not knowing how to fucking pull over (you officers know what i mean) the adrenaline is on full power.
So i grab the mic and yell "code 2!" Dispatcher tells me im on the wrong channel, woops, forgot to switch back. OK back on PDPATROL channel, "unit 7 code 2!" South here, north there, east on whatever, back south on here......
Here comes the Sergeant, "What do you want it for unit 7?"
"Stolen plate sir."
"Cut it off."
"Theres a 10-84 on the hot sheet sir matching the vehicle."
"OK, keep it coming, that may be it."
About a minute later, the whole east end is pursuing this guy. (its a Saturn for God sake)
Cant outrun police radios my friend. Blocked in, hops out, 2 guys, foot pursuit, and a new class of 7 cops fresh and fit out of the academy chasin you. Tackled, cuffed, off to jail.
Gotta love it.....
:D

And people wonder why we don't light em up going to hot calls so much anymore. I don't feel like having some asshole pull over into the left lane right in front of me when they hear the sirens. When I DO run code, though, I demand the right of way. I'll get right on their asses and tap the air horn repeatedly until they get a fucking clue and go to the right.

I dread getting into one myself, mainly becaus of liability issues.

DITTO!!!
When they do not see/hear us (when we're behind them), just another example of most drivers not paying attention to their surroundings & then wonder why there are so many "accidents".

As to pursuits, I have known guys that still love them after years on the job. Since I was hired on in my late twenties, maybe that had something to do with the fact that I just plain hate pursuits. If it works out great, but there are so many that don't, I try to get as close to the car I'm stopping to that maybe they won't be tempted to run just to avoid a traffic ticket as has happened. I've even heard of guys trying to get into pursuit, after talking to some of their trainees (like we want recruits to learn that).

Don't get me wrong, though. I do not want them outlawed by law or by policy, because you don't want them finding out you cannot chase & you never really know why they are running!

This sounds like some safe driving to me.

Whats not safe about it? Your doing 5mph cause some jackass freezes when he sees lights and hears sirens when im trying to get to a call for YOU and YOUR family. YES, i'll nail the air horn, and YES, i'll get on their ass until they move. Guess what? Next time i guarantee my paycheck they'll get the Hell out of the way. :finger:
