I got a call today from a contractor firm working at the Ford Avon Lake plant. (BTW, anyone know the address of the plant? So I can do a map) It is a 2nd shift, possible 50 hr work week with possible Saturdays. (3:30-10:00 or 12:00AM at worst day) (In other words, I'll have no life) :( I would be doing standard pc support and the contract is indefinate.

They are calling me back tomorrow and the lady didn't seem to flinch when I told her what I made at Gateway. The position offers all the benifits but its salary, not hourly. (No OT)
I think for crappy hours, salary and long work weeks I should get at least $18/hr...???

If the pay is good, go for it. Yeah, the hours suck, and the salary figure can work against you if longer days become numerous. But considering the possible benefits, its something you like to do and have done before if I'm not mistaken, and the longterm benefits with an established company like Ford, it can only be good.

I have one buddy who works over that way in one of the ford plants, I think its Lorain, and if he sees this message before tomorrow(he works the 3pm-12 am shift as well), I'll email his response to you if no one else replies to its exact whereabouts. Good luck Brian and I hope it works out for you.

Ok sweet, I hope he sees it. If I remember from working for GM, the 2nd shifter IT support did little or nothing. Playing Duke Nukem was the norm. :D

Waited until 3pm today. Didn't hear from this gal who was suppost to call me. I call back the gal that originally called me around 3:30 and left a message. I'll let you know tomorrow if anything happens. I am getting psyched up for this, it could be a big break into a good company. It sure beats going back to a assembly line fixing computer after computer day after day for ingrates like at gateway.

Well I just got the call back. It turns out the first woman wasn't that well informed. The usual shift start time is 5PM!!! It also sound like they work a lot of 50 hr weeks with all the plans they have. That is pretty much 3rd shift 5pm to 3AM at best! I would be all alone at the Avon plant repairing and caring for outmoded equipment is what I gather. I might goto the interview to see what they are like and for practice, but I doubt I am taking this job. $18 a hour is sounding like a bargain, as I can't forsee any life working 5pm 3am!

I'm not sure how to answer...granted, the hours aren't the best but with some companies, you got to start somewhere and usually its the crap jobs with lousy hours and then you work up from there. Maybe along with the salary, there's bonus' involved not yet mentioned by your contact. I'd go in with a little more optimism as it is with a major corp. and the leads may be productive down the line. Good luck.

Yea supposedly any time you work over 50 hrs a week you are up for a "merit bonus" that they give based on performance. On the bright side, she said that there were only 4 saturdays a year they work on average. It has so many possibilitys, yet they sure need to give me a fat pay increase. From what she said it sounds like it would be pretty dead there.

BTW if you can find a nice way to ask your Ford friend sometime, ask if Ford's computer equipment is really that outdated. LOL.
