I haev a question, if the stae taht your vehicle is registered in requires you to have both front and back plates, but the state you live in only requires rear plates, is it legal to take off the front plate?

MY guess is its not legal, but most officers wouldnt really notice or care or even know that the registered state requires them.. But im jsut curious..

there is a 99% chance they wont notice.... but if that state requires them and your home one doesnt, there is a chance of them pulling ya before they notice you're from out of state.....

my mom got pulled for that on her way back from Mass once....

I wouldnt notice or care...... In SC your only required to have the rear plate. And i bet there is no state statue that says we can ticket someone for not haveing a front plate...

Well the obvious problem is that it's a violation to live in one state and have the vehicle registered in another.

it can't be illegal to live in one state and have out of state plates because before i left i went down to the dmv and talked to them about it and they said that since i am going to be a full time student yadda yadda yadda and still have my car insured in utah that i could keep the car registered in utah they even gave me forms to fill out for every year when registration time comes around (some exempt type forms)

if your HOME state requires you to have two plates then you must have two plates. doesnt matter what the requirements are in the state you are in.....but i would guess your're more than likely not going to get bothered for it unless you P.O. someone and they bother to check. in NY if you are a full time student or military active duty you can have your registration/license in your home state. all states recognize each others registrations and licenses as long as you are COMPLYING with your home state's requirements. .......unless you'd prefer to have border gates/guards all over the place..........

Well Jared, I'm glad you clairified that one. It's legal to be registered in your home state while you are a student in another and as you stated you had to fill out a form. Otherwise it's just as gray says.
